The Japanese administration extended the field using prisoner-of-war labor in 1942, called Field Mandai. The Dutch constructed a new airstrip in 1945.
The Flying Field Section of Indonesia's Department of Public Works assumed control of the facility in 1950. In 1955, the airport was handed over to Civil Aviation, the forerunner of today's Directorate General Air Transportation, which expanded the runway and rechristened the facility Air Mandai.
The airport received its current name, AirPort Hasanuddin, in 1980 when a second runway was constructed. Hasanuddin Airport was once known as the Port of Hasanuddin Air and received its current name in 1985.
The airport was taken over by Perum Angkasa Pura from the Directorate General of Air Transport in 1987. The Minister of Transportation decided in 1994 to open Hasanuddin Airport, currently known as International Airport. Makassar Airport has served as a port of entry and exit for Hajj pilgrims traveling to and from Jeddah since 1990.
